Newport Beach, California was incorporated in 1906. A city in Orange County, is 10 miles (16 km) south of downtown Santa Ana. The city's median family income and property values consistently place high in national rankings, making Newport Beach one of the wealthiest communities in California, and in the United States overall. In February 2010, Portfolio.com ranked Newport Beach as the richest city in the U.S.

Known as Newport Harbor, a semi-artificial harbor that was formed by dredging an estuary during the early 1900s. Several artificial islands were built, which are now covered with private homes: Balboa Island, Little Balboa Island, Collins Island, Bay Island, Harbor Island, Lido Isle and Linda Isle. Newport Harbor once supported maritime industries such as shipbuilding, commerical fishing, but today is mostly used for recreation.
